Spanish
At St. Mary of the Angels we believe in the importance of introducing a Modern Foreign Language into the primary school curriculum. Learning a language enriches pupil’s educational experience and provides an excellent opportunity to develop their intercultural understanding as well as promoting values based on respect, tolerance and equality.
All children from Year 3 to Year 6 have a discrete Spanish lesson per week through the use of our non-specialist MFL programme 'Language Angels'. Our children between Years 3-6 enjoy practising their language skills through fun activities in a range of cross-curricular contexts. This motivates them and helps them to develop their self-confidence and creativity.
Spanish lessons consist of an appropriate balance of spoken and written language which means we always make sure we are practising the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The school aims to hold a Spanish Week once per year (in the summer term) in order to celebrate 'All Things Spanish'. Pupils get to write and perform short plays or songs, learn about Spanish culture, listen to different stories and many other exciting activities. The WHOLE school takes part in Spanish Week - so that the younger children get a 'taster' of Spanish language and culture during the summer term.
